Though rather unusual, a glass casket can be used
for display purposes at the viewing. This allows people to see
the person, without any possibility of touching them physically,
at the wake or viewing.
A glass casket can also be used for small pets. It is not; however,
something that people are buried in because it cannot stand up
to being put into the earth. There are some stipulations regarding
glass caskets, specifically the height and weight of a person
can make it impossible to use one. Refrigerated glass caskets
are used in some cultures that do not allow embalming. These versions
are also not used for burial, but only for viewing.
Some funeral homes offer rentals of a glass casket to grieving
families. It is such an unusual item though, that if you are interested
in renting one, you may need to bring it up. If a glass casket
is important to you, be sure to ask up front before procuring
the services of a mortuary.
